Trevecca competes in NCAA Division II with 15 teams (6 men's and 9 women's), plus cheerleading and intramurals. History

Trevecca Nazarene University was founded in 1901 as a training class for Christian workers, but intercollegiate athletics began in 1969 under President Dr. Mark R. Moore. The first team was men's basketball, coached by Elmer Heaberlin, followed by baseball under Bill Green. The program's first championship came in the 1972–73 season with men's basketball. In 1987, the men's basketball team became the first to reach a national championship tournament, advancing to the Elite 8.

Initially part of the NAIA, Trevecca joined the TranSouth Athletic Conference from 1996 to 2012. The Trojans transitioned to NCAA Division II in the 2012–13 academic year, becoming a founding member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), where they competed until 2024. In fall 2024, Trevecca joined the Gulf South Conference (GSC).

The Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1993 and has inducted 88 members as of 2024, with five new inductees added in July 2024.
